Why the nomination
According to the nomination letter: Donald Trump has “extraordinary statesmanship – marked by his commitment to resolving conflicts and preventing catastrophic wars through visionary and innovative diplomacy.”
Cambodia has made it clear that ending the fighting and achieving an immediate ceasefire is “vital in preventing a great loss of lives.”
The nomination is not only Cambodia’s tribute to Trump’s role, but also reflects Phnom Penh’s new foreign policy strategy of expanding relations with the US and diversifying international links.
This move has earned Trump another Nobel nomination from outside, in addition to the nominations previous nominations from Pakistan and Israel.

A nomination does not guarantee a win: the full list of nominees is not made public and the award is at the discretion of the Nobel committee.
Some analysts have suggested that this is a strategy of “flattery diplomacy” to gain economic or political benefits from the US for Cambodia.

While ending the fighting is an important step, the root causes of the border conflict and remaining instabilities could continue to cause tension.
