BREAKING: The Supreme Court temporarily blocked a lower court’s order requiring the Trump administration to fully fund the SNAP program despite the government shutdown.

An emergency decision by the Supreme Court of the United States has temporarily blocked a lower court’s order requiring the Donald Trump administration to fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) amid the government shutdown.

A federal judge ordered the administration to fully fund November’s SNAP benefits, effective immediately.

However, the Trump administration appealed and asked for a stay, arguing that current funds were insufficient to fully fund the benefits.

On Friday evening, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson — who oversees emergency applications from the First Circuit — issued a temporary restraining order to fully fund SNAP benefits until the appeals court completes its review.
About 42 million Americans who receive SNAP benefits are now in limbo over how much they will receive this month.

SNAP benefits about 1 in 8 Americans; disruptions could force low-income people to seek emergency food.
The decision comes amid the 2025 United States federal government shutdown — the longest in U.S. history.
The issue is not just financial, but political — lawmakers and states are debating how the money should be spent, and the power of courts to force the government to spend it.
The temporary suspension will remain in place until 48 hours after the First Circuit Court of Appeals rules on the Trump administration’s request for a permanent suspension.
In the meantime, some states have paid out their benefits in full, while others are uncertain — creating uneven access to assistance.
