Sydney Sweeney is not having much luck; her latest movie, Christy, is bombing at the box office after a $400,000 opening day.
The biopic stars Sweeney as the titular Christy Martin, the prolific American female boxer who rose to prominence in the 1990s. However, it also deals with the sportswoman’s troubled life outside the ring, most notably her attempted murder by her ex-husband James V Martin in 2010.
The film is currently playing on over 2,000 screens nationwide. The poor result of the previews means Christy is on target for a low $3million opening weekend.
In June, Sweeney explained how she changed her physique in order to play Martin on the big screen: “I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training.”
She continued: “I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”
Speaking more recently on the similarities between herself and the character, the Euphoria star shared: “She is fighting a fight in her home life, and she’s also fighting a fight in the public. And I think that, for me, I find myself in a lot of battles both in front and not in front of the world. So I definitely can relate.”
The movie was released during a tumultuous time for Sweeney, as her public image took a battering after her advert with American Eagle backfired. In a recent interview with GQ, the star refused to apologise for the project, titled Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans, which plays on “jeans” and “genes”. The advert faced criticism for promoting eugenics.
However, she did admit that it was “surreal” to be swept up in a world of political crossfire following interventions from Donald Trump and JD Vance regarding the advert.
Christy was released in cinemas on November 7th, 2025.
