In a quarterback-driven league, it’s easy to overreact to a team having to play its backup quarterback. Ahead of Week 9’s Monday Night Football, for instance, many believe Kyler Murray not getting the start due to a foot sprain will be a break for the Dallas Cowboys defense.

But I’m not sure that is the case at all. Backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett has been far from great but objectively speaking, he has run a more efficient offense, as WFAA’s Ed Werder points out in the X post embedded below. The Cardinals scored 27 on the 7-1 Indianapolis Colts in Week 6 and later went toe-to-toe with the Green Backers. Though both were losses for Arizona, the offense moved the ball well.

That isn’t to say they were great, either. However, if your offense ranks 15th in EPA/play in the last two weeks, you are officially a candidate to explode against the Cowboys defense.

Which leads me to this: Ironically, Brissett’s pocket passing approach could be a desfavorable matchup for the Cowboys. Obviously, Murray’s dual-threat style of play is always a challenge but with how much Dallas has struggled to get to the quarterback, Brissett could be in a great spot for this one.

He has a solid group of weapons starting with TE Trey McBride and WR Marvin Harrison Jr. If his offensive line gives him time, he should find plenty of open options as the Cowboys will lose matchups in coverage consistently.

In other words, no QB1 on this one doesn’t mean the Cowboys defense is in a good spot automatically. Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus will need to prove the “changes” made on defense can pay off. Maybe more blitzing? More press and man coverage? A few personnel changes? Something has to be shaken up for Dallas not to make a backup quarterback look great on national TV.
