RT ⚡ Cowboys’ Hidden Reality: Insider Breaks Silence on Shavon Revel Jr.’s Uncertain Future

While the returning linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is expected to make an immediate impact, analysts caution that the rookie cornerback’s return from an ACL tear should be viewed as a “red-shirt year.”

FRISCO, TX — As the Dallas Cowboys return from their bye week with renewed hope, bolstered by the acquisition of Quinnen Williams and the return of key defensive pieces, a note of caution is being sounded regarding one of those returning players.

While linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is anticipated to provide an immediate boost to the league’s 31st-ranked defense, expectations for rookie cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. should be significantly tempered, according to Bobby Belt of 105.3 The Fan.

This comes in direct response to owner Jerry Jones’ optimism that Revel would “hit the ground running” in Monday night’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

“I think this is ultimately a red-shirt year for Revel,” Belt stated, pumping the brakes on the hype. “I think he’ll play… I don’t think he’ll play a ton… (and) I don’t think we’re going to see him start.”

A Cautious Approach for a Reason

The Cowboys’ caution with the 24-year-old is rooted in a long and careful rehabilitation process. Revel suffered a torn ACL last September during his final collegiate season at East Carolina. While the hope was for a Week 1 debut, a setback in training camp delayed his timeline.

Now, despite looking good in practice, the logical approach is a gradual ramp-up. “What sense would it make for Dallas to send him out there for 30 snaps?” Belt questioned, highlighting that most players need time to readjust after a major injury, especially a rookie who hasn’t played a competitive snap in over a year.

A Healthier Secondary Eases the Pressure

The situation is not as dire as it might have been earlier in the season. The return to health of second-year cornerback Caelen Carson, who played well in his season debut, means Dallas is not forced to rely heavily on Revel immediately. The team can avoid starting depth players like Kaiir Elam or Trikweze Bridges.

The primary goal for Revel’s 2025 season is no longer about saving the defense, but about building a foundation for the future. The most important outcome is for him to get through the final eight games healthy while flashing the first-round talent he displayed before his injury.

Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has confirmed Revel will play against the Raiders. For now, that debut—however limited his snaps may be—is a positive and exciting first step in what the Cowboys hope will be a long and successful career.
