RL Mark Zuckerberg’s Reaction After Billie Eilish Calls Out Billionaires

The 2025 WSJ. Magazine Innovator Awards took place at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, gathering powerful figures from the worlds of art, technology, and fashion. On stage to receive her Music Innovator of the Year award, Billie Eilish made waves with a bold speech about the moral responsibility of those holding immense wealth — including Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who was seated in the audience.

Billie Eilish’s viral statement

During her speech, the Birds of a Feather hitmaker said:

“We’re living in a time when the world feels truly dark and broken. People need empathy and help more than ever — especially in this country. I think if you have money, it’s amazing to use it for good, to help those who need it.”

The 23-year-old singer continued candidly:

“I love everyone, but clearly, there are a few people here who are way richer than I am. If you’re a billionaire, why are you even a billionaire? No hate — but please, use your money for good.”

According to People, the audience burst into laughter and applause after Billie’s remarks — except for Mark Zuckerberg, who was said to have only “smiled awkwardly” without clapping.

As reported by Forbes, the Meta CEO currently ranks third on the list of the world’s richest people, with an estimated net worth of $257 billion. Zuckerberg attended the event with his wife Priscilla Chan, who was honored as Philanthropy Innovator of the Year 2025 for her work through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which funds medical research and health innovation.

Before her speech, Eilish had also donated $11.5 million from her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour earnings to projects focused on food security, climate action, and carbon reduction — a gesture revealed by host Stephen Colbert on stage.

After the “stormy” moment, the Bad Guy singer appeared relaxed, posing with her mother Maggie Baird and mingling with friends such as Hailey Bieber. She sported a classic preppy outfit — a navy blazer, short skirt, brown Oxford shoes, and gray knee-high socks.

Eilish’s bold comments quickly ignited heated debate online. Many praised her for “saying what others are afraid to say,” while critics argued that “no one has the right to tell others how to spend their money.” One People commenter wrote:

“Everyone has the right to use their wealth as they wish, but I respect Billie because she doesn’t just talk — she acts.”

Known for her outspoken activism on social justice, climate change, and ethical issues, Billie Eilish once again proved herself as a fearless young voice. And while Zuckerberg’s non-applause may have been a small detail, it turned the night’s celebration of innovation into one of the most talked-about moments in global media.
