NXT From Tragedy to Triumph: How Squish the Puppy Found Love and a New Life

In April 2016, a young puppy in Ohio found himself in dire straits when he was taken to the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter.

The four-month-old dog, named Squish, was so unwell that he couldn’t even open his mouth to eat. Despite this, he showed remarkable resilience, wagging his tail energetically and offering kisses to everyone around him.

Veterinarians examined Squish and initially believed that a severe infection, likely from a dog bite, was the cause of his facial deformity. They began treating him with antibiotics, hoping to see an improvement in his condition.

However, Squish’s health continued to decline. Unable to eat, he grew increasingly weak, leading the shelter staff to consider euthanasia as an act of mercy to end his suffering.

As Squish’s prospects dimmed, those who cared for him refused to lose hope. They decided to send him for specialized X-rays before making any final decisions. The scans revealed surprising findings.

The source of Squish’s troubles was not an infection, but rather significant fractures in his skull and upper right jaw. Scar tissue had restricted his jaw’s growth, making it nearly impossible for him to open his mouth.

Surgery was essential for Squish’s recovery, but the cost and his poor health meant adoption was unlikely. Yet, as his situation appeared increasingly grim, a glimmer of hope emerged.

Danielle Boyd, a veterinarian completing her internship at the shelter, decided to give Squish a reprieve from his lonely kennel. She took him home for the night, believing he deserved at least one evening of comfort.

Once at Danielle’s home, Squish displayed an incredible capacity for trust. Despite his past pain, he settled into Danielle’s arms and fell asleep, leaving her convinced she couldn’t allow him to be euthanized.

Danielle wasn’t alone in her affection for Squish. Eileen Heldmann, the vet who first assessed him, was equally determined to help. She performed surgery on Squish the following day, a procedure that transformed his life.

The surgery was a triumph, allowing Squish to eat once more. Though it involved the removal of a tooth, an eye, and part of his jaw, the result was a joyful, spirited dog.

Recalling these moments, Danielle told The Dodo, “I cried seeing his excitement as he picked up a tennis ball for the first time, and that was only the beginning of his little victories.”

Squish thrived in his new life with Danielle, delighting in play and the companionship they shared. As fate would have it, Danielle had lost her own dog just two days before meeting Squish, making their bond all the more poignant.
