LDT. Dollywood Unveils “NightFlight Expedition” — A Hybrid Coaster & Water Adventure for Spring 2026
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — Dollywood has announced its most ambitious attraction yet: NightFlight Expedition, a groundbreaking ride combining a family-friendly roller coaster with whitewater rafting, set to open in Spring 2026. The $50 million attraction represents the park’s largest single investment in its history.
A Unique Ride Experience
Developed in collaboration with Herschend Creative Studios and German ride manufacturer Mack Rides, NightFlight Expedition is billed as the world’s first hybrid coaster and whitewater ride. Housed inside a 44,000-square-foot indoor building in Wildwood Grove, the ride can operate year-round, regardless of Tennessee weather.
Guests will enjoy a 5.5-minute journey through four distinct segments:
- Night Flight over the Smokies – Riders “soar” over a virtual Smoky Mountain landscape via immersive projection mapping.
- Whitewater Rapids – A thrilling plunge into over 500,000 gallons of simulated river rapids.
- Mountain Ridge Coaster – Classic coaster drops and climbs in amphibious ride vehicles.
- Bioluminescent Lake Voyage – A gentle, glowing nighttime river segment to conclude the adventure.
Innovative Technology & Storytelling
Custom amphibious ride vehicles seamlessly switch between coaster tracks and water paths, accommodating up to 10 riders per vehicle. Advanced audio, projection mapping, and lighting create the sensation of moving through a mystical Smoky Mountain night.
The ride follows twin scientists Cora and Jasper Oakley on a quest to locate the legendary Secret Lake, home to the glowing Wildwood Tree. Riders experience the adventure from a hybrid aircraft/raft called the “Bioluminator,” combining thrills with immersive storytelling.

Dolly Parton shared her excitement for the ride, calling it “a way to bring the natural beauty of the Smokies at night to life.” She added that NightFlight Expedition would play a “big role in Dollywood’s next 40 years,” emphasizing her ongoing commitment to innovation while honoring the park’s roots.

Dollywood’s 41st season opens March 13, 2026, with exclusive preview days for season passholders ahead of the full launch. Early access allows loyal guests to experience the ride before the general public.
