LDT “Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan Set to Lead Universal’s ‘Miami Vice’ Reboot”
Universal Pictures is moving forward with a highly anticipated reboot of the iconic 1980s crime drama Miami Vice, with Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan in early talks to star as the legendary undercover detectives James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, respectively.

Butler, known for his transformative role in Elvis, is reportedly in negotiations to portray Crockett, the role made famous by Don Johnson. Jordan, acclaimed for his performances in Creed and Black Panther, is expected to take on the role of Tubbs, originally played by Philip Michael Thomas. The film aims to capture the essence of the original series, focusing on the glamour and corruption of 1980s Miami.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, F1), the screenplay is being crafted by Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick) and Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler). Production is slated to begin in 2026, with a theatrical release scheduled for August 6, 2027.
This marks the second film adaptation of Miami Vice, following Michael Mann’s 2006 version starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. The new film is expected to draw inspiration from the show’s first season, highlighting mid-1980s Miami’s glitz, crime, and corruption.
Fans of the original series and newcomers alike are eager to see how Butler and Jordan bring their own energy and dynamic to these legendary characters.
