Toby Keith Was A Lifelong Football Fan
Oklahoma born-country icon Toby Keith was an avid football fan. In his younger years, he played defensive end for Moore High in Moore, OK. His talent for the game found him the opportunity to play semi-pro ball for the Oklahoma City Drillers, in the now defunct, United States Football League.
In his adult years, the “American Soldier” singer was a die-hard Oklahoma Sooners fan and was often spotted along the sidelines at their games. When it came to professional football, Keith pledged his lotalty to the Dallas Cowboys.
Although late musician didn’t attend the University of Oklahoma himeslf, he encouraged all three of his children to enroll. Shelley, Krystal, and Stelen, are now proud OU graduates.
Following his death, the Univeristy of Oklahoma paid homage to the icon by leading an entire football stadium of fans in a singalong to one of his most loved songs. Watch it below!
30 Years Ago, Toby Keith Plays His Newly Released Single For Cowboys Star Troy Aikman
In a recently resurfaced video from 1994, Toby Keith hangs out with the then quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, Troy Aikman, and plays his recently-released single, “Should’ve Been A Cowboy.”
The pair shared an affinity for the University of Oklahoma, as Aikman was the first freshman to start as quarterback at the school in 1984. After college, he was selected as the first overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, and went on to play twelve seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
Keith jokingly introduces the song as the track that “took us off hamburger and put us on T-Bone.” The debut single was a massive hit, reaching number-one on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart just four months after its release. Of course, it went on to be one of the most well-known songs in the genre.
The budding country star casually plays the song, at one point cheekily swapping the lyrics for “should’ve been a Redskin” – one of the Cowboy’s greatest rival teams at the time. Keith and Aikman remained friends over the years and often supported one another at public events.
