SAN FRANCISCO — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday in a video that she will retire at the end of her current term in Congress – starting the long goodbye as the California Democrat wraps up one of the most consequential legislative careers in U.S. history.

“I want you, my fellow San Franciscans, to be the first to know. I will not be seeking reelection to Congress. With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative,” Pelosi – who is currently in San Francisco – announced in a video message.

“As we go forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power,” Pelosi said in the video.

Pelosi, the first and only female Speaker of the House, shattered Congress’s marble ceiling and defined the Democratic Party during some of the country’s most tumultuous years – from the 2008 financial crisis to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For weeks, Pelosi had deflected questions about her political future – insisting her central focus was on ensuring that Prop 50 redistricting ballot measure passed in California. With that achievement in the rear-view mirror, Pelosi quickly made her plans clear that she will not seek another term in the House.

The filing deadline for California is March 6. Another Democrat, state Rep. Scott Wiener and progressive Saikat Chakrabarti have already announced his intent to run in Pelosi’s district, though the official filing period does not open until February 9.

Pelosi, 85, stepped down as the Democratic Leader in 2023. She has maintained a critical role in her party’s machinations – particularly as she exercised her outsized influence to pressure President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race and back Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential nominee, generating a rift with the Biden family.

A prolific fundraiser and arguably the most consequential legislator of our time, Pelosi raised more than $1 billion, leading her party to twice seize the House Majority during her tenure on Capitol Hill.

Pelosi has served in the House since winning a special election in 1987. She climbed the ladder into the Democratic leadership ranks, becoming the first woman to lead a party in Congress in 2002.

Pelosi’s mantra has long been “Know Your Power” – the title of her 2008 memoir. From ripping up a copy of President Trump’s State of the Union address, to wagging her finger at President Trump in the Roosevelt Room, to twice impeaching President Trump, she has never shied away from exerting the immense power she wielded as the Democratic leader.

Last year, Pelosi underwent hip replacement surgery after falling while traveling abroad on a congressional delegation in Luxembourg. After months of wearing sneakers in the halls of Congress, Pelosi has now resumed wearing her signature stilettos.

“I say to my colleagues in the House all the time, no matter what title they have bestowed upon me, Speaker, Leader, Whip, there has been no greater honor for me than to stand on the House floor and say, I speak for the people of San Francisco. I have truly loved serving as your voice,” Pelosi said in the vi
