LDL. BREAKING: Democrats Flip Luzerne County Council, Delivering Major Blow to Trump Stronghold in Pennsylvania. LDL
In a stunning political upset, Democrats have seized control of the Luzerne County Council, flipping the body from a 7-4 Republican majority to an 8-3 Democratic one — a historic shift in a county long considered a Trump stronghold.
The results speak volumes. Democrat Denise Williams, who received the most votes, described the outcome as “almost like a referendum on what’s going on nationally.” She noted that during door-to-door canvassing, voters consistently expressed frustration with the current federal administration.
Indeed, critics point to rising costs from Trump-era tariffs, cuts to Medicaid totaling $1 trillion, and ongoing government dysfunction, including the longest shutdown in U.S. history. Concerns over Trump’s cognitive fitness and recent medical scans have also factored into voter sentiment.
In Tuesday’s election, five seats on the council were up for grabs, all previously held by Republicans. Democrats won four of the five, signaling a dramatic shift in local political dynamics.
Additionally, the blue wave extended beyond the council. Democrat Tim McGinley defeated incumbent Republican Walter L. Griffith Jr. for County Controller, while Mark Bufalino, also a Democrat, won the race for Common Pleas Court Judge against Republican Tom Mosca.
Luzerne County had supported Trump overwhelmingly in the 2024 presidential election, with 90,370 votes to Kamala Harris’s 59,966 — or 59.5% to 39.5%. The county played a key role in Trump’s statewide victory, making this flip even more significant.
Political analysts see this result as a warning sign for Republicans heading into the 2026 midterms. With voter dissatisfaction running high, Democrats are riding momentum that could reshape the political landscape across Pennsylvania and beyond.
The message is clear: Americans are frustrated, mobilized, and ready to vote.
