Houston Rodeo Responds To “Inappropriate” Attire Of Attendees

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is in full swing, but the event organizers have made a major change mid-event.

In recent years, major rodeo events have become more than just a chance to see high-stakes competitions and traditional cowboy skills. Increased attention is given to fashion and attire, and many attendees take the opportunity to craft their best Western outfit for the occasion.

However, given the event’s family-friendly nature, many online viewers have raised concerns about the “inappropriate” attire they are seeing this year. Specifically, users have called out the frequency of overly revealing or “club-like” attire amongst rodeo attendees. See one example below.

In response, the HLSR has implemented a new dress code as part of its code of conducteffective immediately. It states:

“Proper attire must be worn on HLSR Show grounds at all times. HLSR reserves the right to deny admission to or remove any person wearing attire that is considered inappropriate or attire that could detract from the experience with other guests.”

The statement further outlines what is deemed inappropriate:

  • Clothing with objectionable material (including obscene language or graphics)
  • Excessively torn cloth, visible undergarments, and/or clothing that, by nature, exposes excessive portions of the skin that may be viewed as inappropriate for a family environment
  • Clothing, visible tattoos, or any other attire bearing the name, insignia, colors, or other indicia of affiliation to a criminal street gang.

Additionally, the code states that “no clothing or apparel that intentionally obscures the face is permitted unless worn for cultural or religious reasons or a medical condition.”

According to rodeo officials:

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a family-friendly event, and we want every guest, especially young people, to have a safe and memorable experience. We will not allow disruptive behavior or inappropriate attire to take away from the experience that millions of families come here to enjoy.”

About The Houston Rodeo

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo began in 1932 as the Houston Fat Stock Show. It was created to promote the Texas livestock industry during the Great Depression. Roughly 2,000 attendees gathered for the first year. Now, the rodeo attracts more than 2 million annually.

It is the largest livestock show in the world and is considered one of the largest stages in the world. The event spans more than two weeks and hosts roughly 20 concert nights per year. In 2019, George Strait set the attendance record for the event with over 80,000 fans.

The HLSR also has a philanthropic arm with amission centered almost entirely on education, youth, and agriculture. It has awarded approximately $660 million in scholarships to students across Texas since its inception.

Five days remain until the 2026 event closes on March 22nd. The final nights are stacked with country music artists, including Koe Wetzel, Lainey Wilson, Parker McCollum, and Tim McGraw (in that order). Texas native Cody Johnson will close the event with the grand finale on Sunday with openers Jon Pardi and Randy Houser.
