HBO’s latest horror offering, IT: Welcome to Derry, delves into the dark origins of Pennywise the Clown, expanding Stephen King’s iconic universe.

HBO is taking viewers back to the sinister town of Derry, Maine, with its latest horror series, IT: Welcome to Derry. Premiering on October 26, 2025, the show delves into the early history of Pennywise the Clown, offering fans a fresh perspective on Stephen King’s iconic universe.
Set in 1962, the story follows Leroy Hanlon, played by Jovan Adepo, the grandfather of Mike Hanlon, a familiar character from King’s original novel. Leroy becomes drawn into the aftermath of a racially charged tragedy—the burning of the Black Spot nightclub—which soon reveals the presence of an even darker force: Pennywise.
The series features Taylour Paige as Charlotte, Leroy’s wife, and Chris Chalk as Dick Hallorann, a character who will resonate with long-time fans. Returning to reprise his chilling role, Bill Skarsgård once again embodies Pennywise, bringing the shape-shifting menace to life on the small screen.
Helmed by directors Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who previously directed the 2017 and 2019 It films, the prequel series explores themes of fear, trauma, and the shadows lurking beneath Derry’s surface. The Muschiettis have hinted at plans for multiple seasons, aiming to depict other significant events in the town’s dark past, including moments from 1935 and 1908.
Early reviews praise the show for its eerie atmosphere and gripping storytelling. Critics have highlighted the series as both a chilling horror experience and a respectful expansion of King’s universe.
IT: Welcome to Derry is now streaming on HBO Max, with new episodes released weekly. The first season consists of nine episodes, concluding on December 14, 2025.
