LDT “Los Angeles Teacher Draws Attention Over Comments on ICE Enforcement”
Los Angeles — A high school teacher in Los Angeles has attracted national attention after remarks regarding immigration authorities stirred controversy. The comments followed an ICE enforcement operation in South Los Angeles, during which a federal agent and an individual suspected of being in the country illegally were injured.

Ron Gochez, a history teacher at Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School and spokesperson for the activist group Unión del Barrio, spoke to a crowd on Tuesday evening. He stated, “Don’t forget where you’re standing. This is South Central Los Angeles. They are not the only ones with guns in this city.” Gochez clarified that his statement was intended to highlight community self-protection, not to encourage violence.

The incident that triggered these remarks occurred during a traffic stop carried out by ICE agents. According to officials, the individual involved, Carlitos Ricardo Parias, tried to escape by striking federal vehicles, prompting agents to fire in self-defense. Parias was injured in the elbow, and a deputy U.S. marshal sustained a ricochet injury. Both received treatment at a hospital.
Department of Homeland Security officials responded to Gochez’s comments, warning that such statements could potentially encourage violence toward law enforcement. They noted a rise in threats and assaults against ICE personnel in recent months, partly fueled by inflammatory public statements.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) also weighed in, affirming support for free speech while emphasizing that any form of violence is unacceptable. The district reiterated its commitment to a safe, inclusive environment for students and staff.
Gochez’s remarks have prompted discussions about the role of educators in political activism and how their statements may impact school communities. Local authorities and educational leaders are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
