SAN FRANCISCO — Congressman Eric Swalwell announced Thursday night he is running to become California’s next governor.
Swalwell announced his candidacy though his website, revealing his candidacy complete with a minute-long campaign video.
The East Bay rep. also appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Thursday night.
“Our state, this great state needs a fighter and protector. Someone who will bring prices down, lift wages up. And we can say that we’re the fourth largest economy in the world I love to brag about that, but what does that mean if you can’t afford to live here,” he said.
During Trump’s first term, he earned national credentials by frequenting cable news trolling the GOP.
“So I’ve been in these fights. As a city councilmember up in Dublin, my hometown. As a prosecutor in Oakland and taking on the most corrupt President ever in the U.S. Congress. But I’m ready to bring this fight home,” Swalwell said.

And after an unsuccessful 2020 White House bid, Swalwell kept his name in the headlines, managing President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial in the House of Representatives.
“Every other candidate in the field talks about taking on Trump. I’m doing it right now in real time,” he said.
It’s become a driving force to run for governor, Swalwell told ABC7.
“Where I can work with him, I will work with him. Like, I don’t wake up to fight Donald Trump. I wake up to help Californians. He just gets in the way,” he said. “And so, if he wants to extend a hand, that’s great. But if he’s going to attack Californians, I’m going to defend them. And I’ve been doing that.”
It comes after billionaire democratic activist Tom Steyer entered the race Wednesday, whose message focused squarely on affordability.
“The Californians who make this state run are being run over by the cost of living,” he said in a campaign message.
“Eric Swalwell and Tom Steyer clearly felt empowered to jump into this race now, because they looked at the other candidates, and they said, ‘You guys have failed to break through. We could do better,'” said Justin Berton, political consultant.
Berton said the race is still wide open.
“Everybody is looking at the same data and everybody who has a little bit of ambition and a little bit of access to money is thinking, I could be governor,” he said.

An early November Berkeley poll showed that nearly 44% of voters are undecided.
We’ve seen more than a dozen people declare their candidacy for governor, including several high-profile politicians. And there’s still time for more to jump in the race before the June primary. His announcement comes as a large running pool Democrats and Republicans have joined the race , including Congresswoman Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, and former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra.
