B79. 🏈 STEELERS REUNITE WITH A FAMILIAR PLAYMAKER AFTER AARON RODGERS’ INJURY SHAKES UP THE QB ROOM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing back a versatile face just when they need him most — re-signing quarterback–wide receiver hybrid John Rhys Plumlee to their practice squad following Aaron Rodgers’ wrist injury, a setback that has forced the team to adjust quickly and creatively.

Plumlee’s return isn’t just depth — it’s strategy. Coaches expect him to help run the scout team, potentially mimicking the dynamic skill set of rookie phenom Caleb Williams, whose mobility and improvisation Plumlee can replicate better than most.

His journey back to Pittsburgh has been winding. Released by the Seattle Seahawks in September, Plumlee had been without a landing spot until the Steelers called. Seattle had experimented with him exclusively at wide receiver — a shift from his preferred role under center. Before that, Plumlee bounced between positions, serving as QB, WR, and even kick returner during his time with multiple teams.

Plumlee originally signed with Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent out of UCF after the Steelers promised he’d get a real chance at quarterback. And he did — at least briefly. Throughout training camp he lined up everywhere: throwing passes, running routes, and returning kicks. But after final roster cuts, he opted to join Jacksonville, where he worked strictly as a quarterback.

Now, the story comes full circle.

With Rodgers sidelined and the Steelers looking for flexible, high-IQ athletes who can adapt on the fly, Plumlee is back — and this time, his timing couldn’t be better.
