Chris Jones and the Chiefs didn’t disguise their play good enough late vs. the Broncos.

The Kansas City Chiefs really needed that win against the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon in Denver. Winning that game would have really helped them in the race for a wildcard spot. However, while they are not yet out of the playoff race, it stings even more knowing that the Chiefs’ chances of keeping their AFC West championship streak alive are likely to come to an end this season.

In this game, it was a combination of both the offense and the defense. Offensively, you have to score more than 19; defensively, you only gave up 19, but you gave up some pretty big chunk plays at bad times. One of those chunk plays was one the Broncos were a step ahead on. Denver knew exactly what the Chiefs were about to do on 3rd and 15 with two minutes left in the game.

“Great film study from them, because they called it out,” defensive tackle Chris Jones told reporters after the loss. “I actually heard them call it out. They actually switched the line. If you watch the film, you can see Bo Nix switch the line. So, they knew it. We have to do a better job of disguising (plays).”

That is both a Steve Spagnuolo issue and an execution issue, as much as it pains me to say it. The best defensive coordinator this league has ever seen, and certainly the most winningest DC of all time, has to be better there with the disguises. But the Chiefs still have to execute that play call.

On that very play, Broncos QB Bo Nix threw a very nice pass to WR Courtland Sutton, fitting it between two Chiefs defenders. If executed correctly, that’s a play where Sutton could very well not be open at all. Jaylen Watson and Bryan Cook were in coverage there.

At the same time, this is not fully the defense’s fault. Special teams and offense have to have an even bigger role in the loss. Special teams put the Broncos in good field position too many times, and the Chiefs, as we said, only scored 19 points despite having a good offensive line and a good WR corps. Oh, and maybe the best quarterback of all time.

Overall, they need to improve. The Chiefs play the Indianapolis Colts next week, and will desperately need a win after this horrid loss to the Broncos.
