LDT “Texas First”: How George Strait Became a Hero During Hurricane Harvey

In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey devastated the Texas Gulf Coast — destroying homes, flooding cities, and displacing thousands of families.

When George Strait saw the destruction, he didn’t wait for a PR campaign or prepare a flashy statement. He acted immediately.

He opened his San Antonio home as a coordination center for donations. He worked with relief organizations personally. And within days, he joined forces with celebrities, volunteers, and local leaders to plan a massive nationwide fundraiser.

The result was “Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief”, a multi-network TV event hosted simultaneously in Los Angeles, New York, and San Antonio.

George led the Texas segment himself — performing with Miranda Lambert, Chris Stapleton, Lyle Lovett, and Robert Earl Keen.

The benefit raised more than $44 million, with funds going straight to families who lost everything.

After the cameras stopped, George continued working quietly behind the scenes:

  • donating privately
  • helping rebuild communities
  • checking in on families who were struggling
  • supporting Texas charities long after media attention faded

He never bragged about it. For him, helping Texas wasn’t a headline — it was home.
