In the precious bye week of the Kansas City Chiefs after the 21-28 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Patrick Mahomes still did not leave the stadium lights – but this time for a different purpose. Together with his wife Brittany Mahomes, the three-time Super Bowl MVP stayed in Kansas City to attend the NWSL quarterfinal match of the women’s team KC Current, where Brittany is a co-owner.
Before that, the couple flew to Lubbock, Texas, Mahomes’ hometown and also the place where he made his name at Texas Tech University. There, Mahomes appeared on ESPN’s College GameDay program, cheering the Red Raiders to victory over BYU, in an atmosphere full of excitement and emotion from a son returning home.
But what touched the community most was not on the stands. Singer Josh Abbott revealed that Mahomes had quietly helped raise 130,000 USD for Heaven’s 27 Foundation – the organization commemorating 27 young women who died in the Guadalupe River flood in July. That discreet act was only known when Mahomes was unexpectedly honored at the Texas Tech game.
When asked about this gesture, Mahomes shared briefly but full of emotion: “Sometimes football makes people remember victories, but what’s more important is using your influence to help those who are suffering loss. If I can bring a little hope, I will always do it.”
During the bye week, while other teams rest, Mahomes still inspires in his own way – not with a 70-yard throw, but with a heart turned toward the community. Once again, the Chiefs’ captain showed that true leadership does not only appear on Sundays.
