SD. New Sydney Sweeney movie ‘Christy’ bombs at box office

Sydney Sweeney Faces Rough Week as ‘Christy’ Flops at Box Office
Sydney Sweeney is having a challenging time in Hollywood. Her latest film, Christy, a biopic about American boxing legend Christy Martin, opened to a disappointing $400,000 on its first day, with projections pointing to a low $3 million opening weekend. The movie is currently showing on over 2,000 screens nationwide, but the poor early numbers have cast a shadow over the release.
Christy chronicles the life of the 1990s boxing star, covering her rise to fame as one of the most successful female athletes in the sport. The film also explores Martin’s troubled personal life, including her 2010 attempted murder by ex-husband James V Martin.
Sweeney spoke earlier this year about the intense physical preparation required for the role. “I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training,” she explained. “I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”
The Euphoria star also drew parallels between herself and Martin. “She is fighting a fight in her home life, and she’s also fighting a fight in the public. And I think that, for me, I find myself in a lot of battles both in front and not in front of the world. So I definitely can relate,” Sweeney said.
However, the film’s release coincides with a turbulent period for Sweeney’s public image. Her American Eagle campaign, titled Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans, sparked criticism over perceived eugenics messaging. In a recent interview with GQ, she declined to apologize for the ad but admitted it was “surreal” to find herself embroiled in political controversy, including comments from figures like Donald Trump and JD Vance.
Despite her efforts and dedication to portraying Martin authentically, Sweeney is facing a tough reception from both the box office and the public. Christy premiered in US cinemas on November 7, 2025, and is now on track to see a challenging opening weekend.
