NXT Severely Neglected Poodle Had Forgotten How To Eat, Then Everything Changed

When a Tampa woman glimpsed a frail, skeletal poodle standing in the window of a nearby home, she knew something was terribly wrong. That sight led to a heartbreaking discovery — and ultimately, a powerful story of resilience and compassion. The severely neglected poodle, later named Beni, was one of three starving dogs found inside the house. Tragically, two of the dogs didn’t survive. Beni, barely clinging to life, was rushed to a local shelter. His condition was so dire that he was scheduled for euthanasia. But a last-minute email changed everything.

This story of a neglected dog rescued in Florida reflects both the deep cruelty animals can suffer and the extraordinary kindness that can follow. Beni’s journey, shared by Senior Paws Sanctuary and reported by The Dodo, reveals how even the most broken spirits can begin to heal when given care, time, and love.

At just 9 years old, Beni was in critical condition. He was dangerously underweight, had diabetes, a tumor on his foot, a skin infection, and had lost most of his fur. Shelter staff did what they could, but his prognosis was grim. That’s when Debbie Goldsberry, founder of Senior Paws Sanctuary in Fort Myers, received the shelter’s email plea. If no rescue stepped in, Beni wouldn’t make it out alive.
Goldsberry and her team acted quickly. Volunteers arranged for transport, and Beni was taken two hours south to Fort Myers, where he was immediately seen by a veterinarian. The odds were not in his favor. According to Goldsberry, Beni had been starved for so long that he had forgotten how to eat. He would place food in his mouth but didn’t know how to chew or swallow it properly. Even when he managed to ingest something, his body struggled to process it.
“He would also refuse water,” Goldsberry told The Dodo. “Most diabetics want a lot of water, but Beni wanted nothing.”
I found this detail striking — the idea that a dog could be so deprived that even the basic instinct to eat had faded. It speaks to the depth of his suffering, but also sets the stage for the incredible recovery that followed.
Despite his fragile state, Beni began to show signs of life. Slowly, with careful monitoring and gentle encouragement, he started to eat small amounts and drink water. Day by day, he gained strength. Goldsberry brought him into her sanctuary, where he joined 26 other rescue dogs. There, Beni experienced something he may never have known before: safety and affection.
Goldsberry spent countless hours holding Beni, reassuring him that he was no longer alone. “He had lived through who knows what,” she said. “I can’t imagine being that hungry that he didn’t know how to eat.”
As weeks passed, Beni’s health improved. His diabetes stabilized, his fur grew back into a sleek black coat, and his personality began to shine. He wagged his tail, picked up toys, and greeted everyone with joy. “He never stops wagging his tail now,” Goldsberry shared. “He never meets a stranger.”
But just as Beni was beginning to thrive, a new challenge emerged. After removing the tumor from his foot, veterinarians discovered that Beni had terminal cancer. He was diagnosed with stage three of five. It was a devastating blow, but it didn’t change how Goldsberry and her team approached his care.
“We try [to] make each day special for our little ‘blessing’ and he will be cared for and loved for the rest of his life,” she said.
Now, Beni is living out his days in comfort, surrounded by people who cherish him. His story is a powerful reminder of the importance of animal rescue and the profound impact that compassion can have on a life. From a dog who had forgotten how to eat to one who now greets the world with a wagging tail, Beni’s transformation is nothing short of remarkable.
