LDT “June Lockhart, Beloved Star of Lassie and Lost in Space, Dies Peacefully at 100”
Legendary actress June Lockhart, whose warmth and grace defined generations of television storytelling, has died at her home in Santa Monica at the age of 100. Her family confirmed she passed peacefully, surrounded by her daughter and granddaughter.

Lockhart’s career stretched across more than eight decades, from black-and-white classics to modern-day reboots. Best known for her roles as the devoted mother Ruth Martin in Lassie and the intelligent, unflappable Dr. Maureen Robinson in Lost in Space, she became a cultural touchstone for millions of viewers.
Born in New York City in 1925 to actor parents Gene and Kathleen Lockhart, she made her film debut as a child in A Christmas Carol (1938). She went on to appear on Broadway, earning a Tony Award in 1947 before transitioning into a flourishing television career.
In Lassie (1958–1964), Lockhart portrayed the quintessential TV mother — nurturing, composed, and unwavering in moral strength. A year later, she stepped into a very different kind of motherhood as Dr. Robinson in Lost in Space (1965–1968), bringing emotional depth to a pioneering science-fiction series that introduced family drama to outer space.
Her influence extended beyond acting. Lockhart was recognized by NASA in 2014 for inspiring public interest in space exploration — a fitting tribute to the actress who helped make science fiction part of America’s cultural heartbeat.
Over her lifetime, she continued to appear in television and film, occasionally revisiting her classic roles and mentoring younger actors. Colleagues and fans alike remembered her not only as a consummate professional but as a symbol of kindness, intellect, and quiet strength.
“June Lockhart showed generations what dignity and empathy looked like on screen,” said a statement from the Television Academy. “Her work continues to resonate — from Lassie’s countryside to the stars of Lost in Space.”
Lockhart is survived by her family, including her daughter, actress Anne Lockhart. Plans for a public memorial are expected to be announced in the coming days.
