LDT “New York Jets Legend Nick Mangold Dies at 41 Following Kidney Disease Complications”

The New York Jets community is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved figures. Former All-Pro center Nick Mangold, a cornerstone of the franchise for more than a decade, has died at the age of 41 from complications related to kidney disease, the team confirmed Sunday.

Mangold, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time first-team All-Pro, anchored the Jets’ offensive line from 2006 to 2016. Drafted 29th overall out of Ohio State, he quickly earned a reputation for toughness, intelligence, and leadership — traits that made him a fan favorite and one of the most respected centers of his era.

“Nick was the heartbeat of our locker room,” former Jets coach Rex Ryan said in an emotional tribute. “He was a great player, but an even better person — it’s just devastating news.”

Mangold publicly revealed in early October that he had been battling a genetic kidney disorder since his rookie year and was undergoing dialysis while searching for a compatible donor. Despite his condition, he continued to engage with fans online, urging others to support kidney health awareness and organ donation programs.

His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes across the NFL, with former teammates, fans, and rival players expressing grief and admiration for a man remembered as the ultimate teammate and a model of perseverance.

During his 11-season career, Mangold started 164 games and helped guide the Jets to two AFC Championship appearances. His jersey number 74 has become synonymous with consistency and leadership — a legacy the team says will “forever remain part of Jets history.”

“Nick represented the best of what it means to be a New York Jet,” the team said in a statement. “Our hearts are with his family, friends, and all who were inspired by his courage.”

Mangold is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and their three children. The family has requested privacy as they plan a public celebration of his life in the coming days.
